Mental Health and Well-Being
The mental health and well-being of our children is crucial to our purpose as a school; providing an environment in which our young people can be themselves and learn how to live and learn together, is at the heart of all that we do.
In this day and age, more than ever, creating a school culture centred on the needs of our individual children, as they make sense of an ever-challenging world, is vital. At New Scotland Hill, the Autumn Term 2020, saw us launch our new P.S.H.E. curriculum that recognises the impact of events in our wider world, whilst ensuring that our children learn the core skills and develop an understanding of their place in school, our community and the world.
In October 2020, we launched our commitment to well-being through our 'Young Minds' day. A range of events and activities set the tone for this thread within our ongoing curriculum. From yoga and mindfulness, reflection and discussion, to colour runs to celebrate the joy of laughter, the day was about recognising what it means to be a part of a special school community, whilst also being an individual.
To us, days like Friday 9th when we celebrated Young Minds, are not one-off gestures; they are meaningful and show a commitment to giving our young people the very best environment in which to be reflective, develop self-awareness and flourish. Our ongoing work around well-being is centred on an inspirational text: 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse', in which the emotions and feelings that drive our everyday lives are explored. We have adopted this fine text as the thread for our P.S.H.E. curriculum. Enjoy our displays below, that show how each class has interpreted elements of the text:
