Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Here you will find all the information you need to know about the goings-on in Year 1.

Daily and weekly arrangements:

Adults in our class are Mrs Saunders, Mrs Broadbent and Miss Taylor. Outdoor Learning is taught by Mr Boardman and PPA is covered by Mrs Bhatti and Mrs Lister.

Outdoor Learning will be on a 'Muddy' Monday and  PE will be on a Tuesday. Please send children to school wearing PE kit on these days, but bring school uniform in a separate bag to change into if they get wet during a PE lesson. Please dress children appropriately for the weather - jogging bottoms, hoodies, waterproof layers and wellington boots in the winter, with suncream applied and caps in the summer.

We will visit the library every Wednesday and children will only be able to choose a new book to take home once they have returned their previous one.

Please ensure children bring their reading book and water bottle to school every day.

Key Stage One Children are provided with a piece of fresh fruit each day. If you would prefer to send in a morning snack, please ensure that it is healthy (no crisps or biscuits please) and nut free.

Please ensure that all uniform and personal belongings are clearly labelled.

Communicating with school:

For general things e.g. lost jumpers, wearing trainers etc, please contact Mrs Saunders using the messaging function on Seesaw (Tuesday to Friday).

Any changes to school pick-up should go through the school office. Please also ensure any communication goes through the office on Mondays.

For more significant concerns or worries, please email secretary@nshprimary.co.uk with FAO Saunders in the subject.

Phonics

We follow the Read Write Inc scheme to teach Phonics.

  • Parents can support their children by reading the decodable books at home and encouraging them to tell stories, even familiar ones.
  • Showing interest in reading and talking about books helps children develop a love for reading.
  • The programme is supported by Oxford Owl, which offers resources for home learning and additional reading practice.

Wider Curriculum

This term we will be focused on a geography-based topic. Children will develop their understanding of the world by learning to name and locate the seven continents and five oceans. They will explore similarities and differences between places by studying our small local area in the United Kingdom and comparing it with a contrasting country.

Children will learn to identify hot and cold regions of the world, focusing on the Equator and the North and South Poles. They will build their geographical vocabulary by describing key physical features such as mountains, rivers, and forests, as well as human features like cities, farms and ports.

Pupils will gain practical skills by using maps, atlases and globes to locate countries, continents and oceans.

Links with art and design allow children to express their learning creatively, using techniques such as drawing, painting and sculpture with a variety of materials.
