Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Here you will find all the information you need to know about the exciting learning taking place in Year 5!

We hope you all had a wonderful summer break and are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. We are delighted to welcome the children back to school and are looking forward to all the learning and experiences Year 5 has in store.

Our topic this term is ‘The Industrial Revolution and the Victorian Era’. Throughout the term, we will be travelling back in time to explore what life was like during the Victorian period and discover how the Industrial Revolution changed Britain and the wider world.

Our learning will include:

  • Understanding what the Industrial Revolution was and how it changed Britain.
  • Identifying the changes to towns, cities, transport and technology during the Victorian era.
  • Investigating the impact of industrialisation and the British Empire on different people and communities.
  • Understanding what life was like for rich and poor Victorians, including the homes they lived in and the work they did.
  • Exploring Victorian beliefs and how religion and scientific ideas influenced society.
  • Using historical sources to understand different views and interpretations of the Victorian era and British Empire.

As part of our topic, we will also be exploring the work of the famous British artist:

  • L. S. Lowry.

We will look at his distinctive style and his paintings of industrial towns, factories and the people who lived and worked within them. We will use his work as inspiration for our own artwork, experimenting with different techniques and creating our own industrial landscapes.

Throughout the term, we will be developing our historical enquiry skills by asking questions, examining evidence and considering what life was really like during this fascinating period of history.

We will also be considering some key questions throughout our topic and using our research, discussion and knowledge to help us answer them by the end of the term.
