Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

We hope that you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday and are ready to tackle the exciting challenges that Year 3 holds for you. We are very excited to welcome you to the class.

In topic this term we will travel back in time to find out all about the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings. We will concentrate on understanding the reasons why both Anglo Saxons and the Vikings chose to invade and settle in Britain and the impact they both had on shaping our past and the legacy they left on our life today.

Our topic will cover the following themes and ideas:

  • What artefacts can tell us about the past.
  • How ‘who is telling the story’ influences our understanding of past events.
  • Where we are still able to see Anglo-Saxon and Viking influences on life today.
  • How we can begin to use historical evidence to help form our own opinions on past events.

Some of our cross – curricular activities will involve the children developing their geographical skills in using atlases and Google Earth to map where the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings came from and where they settled in Britain. Learning about the story of Sutton Hoo and empathising with the feelings of the archaeologists involved through Drama. Using their art skills to design and make Anglo – Saxon amulets out of clay and using collage and painting techniques to replicate Viking longboats and finding out how Christianity spread through the Anglo-Saxon times during RE sessions.

  • Throughout our learning, we will be considering key enquiry questions (listed below) and using our research and newly acquired knowledge to answer them.
  • In the past, historians described the Saxon times as, The Dark Ages. Was this in fact true?
  • Did the Vikings deserve their reputation as vicious raiders or were they just peaceful settlers?
