Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Here you will find all the information you need to know about the goings on in Year 5.

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter holidays. We are excited to start the summer term and look forward to all the super things it will bring!

As a reminder, Mrs Wells teaches on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and Mrs Higgins teaches on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Our topic this term is Rainforests which is a geography based topic, in which we will learn about this amazing habitat as well as learning about some of the tribes who live within them, particularly the Maya. This will be done through:

  • Using atlases and maps to identify where the rainforests are situated around the world.
  • Identifying the position and significance of lines of latitude, longitude, the Equator, hemispheres and the Tropics.
  • Describing the key features of climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts.
  • Conducting a study of non-European society that contrasts with our own - in this case the Maya.
  • We will also be doing an artist study on Henri Rousseau.

Throughout our learning, we will be considering key questions (listed below) and using our research and newly acquired knowledge to answer them.

Why are rainforests so important?

What is causing their disappearance  ?

What impact have the Mayas had on us today?

How are the Mayas similar to other civilisations?

Our first English units of work will link very closely with the rainforest topic where we will be writing for a range of purposes and audiences such as letters, travel journals, instructions, explanations and some poetry. After half term, our writing will be based around the picture book ‘The Rainplayer'

We continue to follow White Rose curriculum in Maths and the Year 5 topic overview can be found on the Maths Curriculum page by clicking here.

PE days will continue to be on Tuesday and Fridays. Please remember to come to school wearing your PE kit for the time being.

Please ensure you bring your pencil case, reading diary and reading book to school every day.

Homework and spellings will continue to be set via Seesaw.

Here’s to a wonderful and hard-working Spring term!
