Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Here you will find all the information you need to know about the goings on in Year 6.

We hope you have all had a restful and wonderful Easter break and we look forward to seeing you on the 20th April.

Our topic this term is Rainforests which is a geography based topic, in which we will learn about this amazing habitat as well as learning about some of the tribes who live within them, particularly the Maya. This will be done through:

  • Using atlases and maps to identify where the rainforests are situated around the world.
  • Identifying the position and significance of lines of latitude, longitude, the Equator, hemispheres and the Tropics.
  • Describing the key features of climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts.
  • Conducting a study of non-European society that contrasts with our own - in this case the Maya.
  • We will also be doing an artist study on Henri Rousseau.

Throughout our learning, we will be considering key questions (listed below) and using our research and newly acquired knowledge to answer them.

Why are rainforests so important?

What is causing their disappearance  ?

What impact have the Mayas had on us today?

How are the Mayas similar to other civilisations?

Our first English units of work will link very closely with the rainforest topic and will be based around the novel 'The Children of the Benin Kingdom' and the picture book The Rainplayer'

We continue to follow White Rose curriculum in Maths and the Year 6 topic overview can be found on the Maths Curriculum page by clicking here.

We will also be spending the first part of the Summer term preparing for our SATs tests which will occur during the week of the 9th May. More information will be available at the parent information session on Tuesday 26th April.

PE days will continue to be on Tuesday and Thursdays. Please remember to come to school wearing your PE kit for the time being.

Please ensure you bring your pencil case, reading diary and reading book to school every day.
